Roosevelt Memorial
The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial stands between the Tidal Basin and the Potomac River south of the National Mall, and is administered by the National Park Service. Designed by famed landscape architect Lawrence Halprin and dedicated by President Bill Clinton in 1997, the park-like memorial to the 32nd President consists of four distinct outdoor rooms and gardens, each one representing a term from FDR’s unmatched four-term Presidency. Walking from one room to the next, the story of Roosevelt’s leadership through the Great Depression and World War II is illustrated via sculpture, carved stone reliefs, and flowing waterfalls of increasing complexity, representing the challenges the US and the world faced through the 1930s and 40s.
