St. John's Church
St. John’s Episcopal Church is the famous home of the Second Virginia convention, during which Patrick Henry delivered his famous “Give me liberty or give me death” speech during the revolution. Henry’s speech inspired the passing of a resolution and only a short while after the American Revolution began. St. John’s still operates as a church with an active ministry and congregation, although there is a small shop inside the church which has regular tour offerings about the long history of the building.
- Visit the church in which Pocahontas (daughter of Chief Powhatan) was held for a year while being taught Christianity and English
- See the historic burial grounds of George Wythe, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Elizabeth Arnold Poe, Edgar Allan Poe’s mother.
