Liberty Bell
An iconic symbol of American Independence, the famously cracked Liberty Bell became widely known after an 1847 short story claimed that the bell was rang on July 4th, 1776, upon hearing of the Second Continental Congress’s vote for independence. Beginning in 1885 the City of Philadelphia, which owned the bell, allowed it to tour the country and serve as a “Traveling Icon of Freedom” until additional cracking and chipping began to occur that forced the city to maintain it as a tourist attraction in Philadelphia. Today the Bell is located near Independence Hall at the Liberty Bell Center where visitors can come to learn about the history of the Bell, and see it in person.
