United Nations Headquarters

The United Nations, originally founded by the Allied forces in the Second World War, began a lengthy move from London to New York City in 1946.  The headquarters of this world organization, devoted to international humanitarianism and peaceful conflict resolution, is located on an 18-acre site along the East River in Manhattan that was donated by John D. Rockefeller, Jr.  Not technically on US soil, the headquarters complex has its own security force, fire department, and even post office complete with unique UN stamps.  The modernist buildings of the site, including the 39-story glass, aluminum, and marble-faced Secretariat tower and low-slung, curved General Assembly building were designed by a team of 11 prominent architects from around the world.  From the United Nations Visitors Centre, guests can go on guided tours of the building.

  • View some of the world art given to the United Nations Headquarters from around the globe
