Museum of Modern Art
The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) was founded in 1929 to provide New York City with a venue exclusively for modern art. Led by progressive patrons Miss Lillie P. Bliss, Mrs. Cornelius J. Sullivan, and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, Jr., the museum was a daring venture at the time as most museums were too conservative to display modern art. However, MoMA was incredibly popular, and it grew over the years to become one of the most influential museums of modern and contemporary art in the world. The museum was completely renovated in 2004, opening a brand-new building designed by Yoshio Taniguchi with almost double the space for exhibitions and programs. Today, MoMA’s collection includes over 150,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, architectural models and drawings, and design objects and 22,000 films.
