National Cemetery
Originally called Soldier’s National Cemetery at Gettysburg, this cemetery was built to commemorate the Battle of Gettysburg and provide adequate burial grounds for those involved. Since the fallen soldiers were originally buried on the actual battleground, they had to be dug up and reburied nearly seven years later. The design has two unique facets: at the center lies a memorial that commemorates the Union victory, and then has the individual graves designed in semi-circles going outwards, which is intended to illustrate the essential equality of the American society.
- Pay your respects to one of the largest tributes to Civil War era soldiers
- See the awe-inspiring beauty of the grounds, and the meaningful concept behind the design of the cemetery
