Paul Revere House

The Paul Revere House offers both a chance to learn about an important figure in American history and to see firsthand what life was like in a colonial household.  The wooden structure was built in about 1680, making it the oldest building still standing in downtown Boston, and one of the few wooden colonial buildings still standing in the US.  A quaint contrast to the neighboring brick Pierce/Hichborn House built in about 1711 and also maintained by the Paul Revere Memorial Association, the Paul Revere House is of an older style, and clearly from an earlier time.  It was already 90 years old when Paul Revere purchased the house in 1770 and moved in his wife, mother, and five children.  Revere, a successful Bostonian silversmith, became famed in US history for his role as a Patriot messenger in the American Revolution, particularly his fateful April 18, 1775 Midnight Ride to alert rebel leaders of the Redcoats’ advance in preparation for the battles of Lexington and Concord.

  • See the stark difference through centuries of early American architecture
  • Check out the 900 pound bell, the small mortar, and a bolt from the USS Constitution, all made by Paul Revere and his sons
