New England Aquarium

The New England Aquarium is a leading aquarium in the US, with a strong focus on public education, research, and global marine conservation.  Opening as a private non-profit in 1969, it is the most successful of the four aquariums that have operated throughout Boston’s history, attracting over a million visitors annually and revitalizing the previously run-down waterfront area.  There are many popular exhibits, including the penguin exhibit with over 80 birds, the northern fur seals and harbor seals, and the Edge of the Sea Touch Tank, where visitors can reach into the water and examine hermit crabs, sea stars, and other coastal critters.  The landmark display at the aquarium is the massive, four-story tall, 40 foot wide Giant Ocean tank, a recreation of a Caribbean coral reef populated by hundreds of colorful fish, sand tiger sharks, stingrays, barracudas, moray eels, and grand dame Myrtle the green sea turtle, who has lived in the tank since 1970.

  • Watch the "Southern Rockhopper" Penguin, a green anaconda or a sand-tiger shark navigate their individual exhibits
  • See the breath-taking Moon Jellys as they float majestically
  • See the magnificient, four-story 'Giant Ocean Tank' that houses Myrtle the Green Sea Turtle and nearly 600 other animals
