Freedom Trail
The Freedom Trail is a unique, 2.5 mile walkable red-brick and red-paint path through American history in Boston’s downtown. The idea to link the city’s treasured landmarks along a marked trail that visitors could easily follow was first spearheaded by local newspaper columnist Bill Schofield in 1951. The Freedom Trail Foundation was formed in 1964 to promote and preserve the trail, and in 1974 the National Park Service established the Boston National Historic Park, recognizing the value of the stops along the trail. Among the stops are:
- Boston Common
- State House
- Park Street Church
- Granary Burying Ground
- King’s Chapel
- King’s Chapel Burying Ground
- Benjamin Franklin Statue/Boston Latin School
- Old Corner Book Store
- Old South Meeting House
- Old State House
