Faneuil Hall

Faneuil Hall is a public marketplace, meeting hall, and historic stop on the Freedom Trail.  Located halfway between Boston Common and the waterfront, it was built in 1742 to serve as a center of commerce in Boston’s downtown.  Today shops still occupy the first floor as they have for over 250 years and Faneuil Hall is the anchor of the larger complex of 19th century buildings that form the bustling Faneuil Hall Marketplace.  However, the real history of this hall comes from events held in its second story meeting hall.  Here Boston patriots meet in 1764 to protest the Stamp Act and the Sugar Act, originating the argument of “no taxation without representation.”  The Boston Tea Party was partially planned in Faneuil Hall, and the revolutionary activism it hosted earned it the nickname the “Cradle of Liberty.”
