Madison Square Garden
Madison Square Garden, the “world’s most famous arena,” is Manhattan’s top venue for concerts, sporting events, and much more. This arena opened in 1968 and is the fourth incarnation of Madison Square Garden since the original of 1879. It stands directly above the underground second Penn Station, the busiest train station in North America and major gateway to New York City. The Garden is home to the New York Rangers hockey team and the New York Knicks and Liberty basketball teams, and it hosts countless other events from tennis to boxing to the WWE. World-famous musicians regularly play Madison Square Garden – just a few of the acts currently performing include Andrea Bocelli, Enrique Iglesias, Lady Gaga, Linkin Park, and Usher. The Garden is even home to the 135-year-old Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, and it is always a popular venue for other major events in New York City.
- Public outcry over the 1963 demolition of the original Pennsylvania Station that stood on the site of the current Madison Square Garden helped inspire the historic preservation movement in New York City and prevented similar attempts to tear down the similarly iconic and historic Grand Central Terminal
- Take a tour of the Garden behind the scenes, revealing the fascinating inner workings of a major sports and entertainment complex
